General Information:

Main Airports:

  • Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) is Spain's largest international airport serving Madrid.  
  • Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) is the main international airport in the NE of Spain serving Barcelona and surrounding areas.
  • There are a total of 36 international airports in Spain but the two above are the largest.

Climate:

  •  In Spain there are five types of climate:
  • the climate of the northern Atlantic coast, cool, humid and rainy;
  • the climate of the central plateau, quite arid with relatively cold winters and hot

              summers (Madrid);

  • the Mediterranean climate of the southern and eastern coasts (Barcelona, Balearic        Islands, Valencia, Málaga), mild and sunny;
  • the almost African climate of the Andalusian plain (Seville, Córdoba), mild in winter and    very hot in summer;
  • finally, the mountainous climate of the Pyrenees and the Sierras, more or less cold    depending on altitude.

Getting Around:

  • Train- the best and fastest way to travel long distances is by taking the train.  From Madrid you can reach Barcelona in 2.5 hours.  
  • Bus- if you are on a budget and don't mind longer travel times than taking the bus is the best way to get around the country.  
  • Plane- Spain has regular domestic flights across its nearly 60 airports and is the quickest way to travel to its outlying islands.
  • Car-if you are looking to travel in a certain area renting a car might be the option for you.

These are the outlying islands off the east coast of Spain and are known for their sapphire-colored waters and amazing beaches.  The largest four islands are Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera.  These islands boast countless beaches, rugged cliffs and white sand coastlines.

Straddling the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees mountains, Barcelona is known for its modernist architecture, city beaches and Las Ramblas street.  Visiting some of Antoni Gaudi's whimsical architecture such as the La Sagrada Familia is a must!  Touring the ancient Gothic Quarter and then visiting the Boqueria Market which opened in 1840 are just some of the other must do's in this beautiful city.

 Situated at the foot of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountain range and a 3.5 hour train ride from Madrid is Granada.  This area is known for the stunning Alhambra palace complex which merges Moorish and Christian elements.  Step back in time as you wind through the cobblestone streets of Albayzin or enjoy traditional tapas while overlooking the magnificent Alhambra.

The Spanish capital has a vibrant street culture and neighborhoods are lined with quaint little bars and taverns with locals hopping from one bar to the next to sample a selection of Iberian hams, cheeses and wines.  Madrid is known for its world-class art museums as well.

 There is something magical about visiting Salamanca and seeing the golden sandstone glow in the evening light.  Visit the beautiful Plaza Mayor for an unforgettable experience in the evening and then venture to a tapas bar to join with the local student population for a night to remember.

This city in northern Spain in the Basque region is known for its white-sand beaches as well as its gourmet experiences.  San Sebastian has the greatest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per square meter in Europe and the second in the world behind Tokyo.

 Located in the Andaluisian region Seville is the best place for cultural sightseeing.  With its horse drawn carriages, flamenco performances and Gothic and Islamic style structures this city will charm you with all it has to offer.

This 2000 year old walled city located by the Tagus River has layers and layers of history.  Walk along the narrow cobblestone streets to catch glimpses of each of its three cultures- Christian, Muslim and Jewish and then stop at a small cafe to eat paella and watch the locals stroll by.
